How to Find a Color Name

  1. 1Type or pick a color under Name That Color — HEX, RGB, HSL and OKLCH all work.
  2. 2Read the nearest CSS named color (a keyword you can use directly in CSS) and the nearest everyday color name, with a label for how close each match is.
  3. 3Copy a name or its hex value with the buttons under each match.
  4. 4Browse the full list of CSS named colors below: search by name or hex, filter by hue family, and sort by name, hue or lightness.
  5. 5Click a color to copy its name, or hover it to copy the HEX or RGB value. The CSS output shows the color you picked as a ready-to-use declaration.

Frequently Asked Questions

148. CSS Color Module Level 4 defines 148 color keywords, such as tomato, rebeccapurple and cornflowerblue. That count includes duplicate spellings: every keyword with gray also has a grey version (darkgray and darkgrey, for example), and aqua/cyan and fuchsia/magenta are the same colors. There are also special keywords like transparent and currentColor, which aren't fixed colors.

It converts your color and every named color to OKLab, a color space built around how people see color, and picks the name with the smallest distance. That distance is shown as ΔE: around 1 is barely noticeable, and under 5 is very close.

The nearest CSS named color is always a valid CSS keyword, so you can write it straight into your stylesheet. The nearest color name searches a larger list of everyday names, such as Prussian Blue, Sage or Terracotta, so it often finds a closer, more descriptive name — but those names aren't CSS keywords.

No. Tomato, TOMATO and tomato all work. Lowercase is the usual convention.
